Chapter Eight

Charlotte’s sister approached Thomas with a kind smile and a curtsy. “Lord Thomas, Lord Paul,” Miss Haverford said to them after greeting his parents.

Paul’s family was about somewhere as well but he’d declared that he wasn’t leaving Thomas’s side tonight because he didn’t wish to miss a thing. By that, it was understood that he meant Thomas’s demise when Charlotte realized that he was him.

He was so terribly glad he could provide such entertainment for his old friend.

“How do you do, Miss Haverford?” Thomas inquired politely when it became clear that Miss Haverford was not moving on to the next cluster of guests but was instead hovering at his side.

“I have a message for you, my lord,” she said quietly, her cheeks going bright pink all the way up to her flaxen hair.

“Indeed?” Thomas said, his heart thudding painfully.

Charlotte knows. That was his first thought. She knew and she’d sent her sister to tell him she didn’t wish to see him again, not as Lord Thomas or as Lord Paul.

Miss Haverford pinched her lips together before blurting out, “My sister wishes to meet with you.”

He blinked. “She wishes to meet...with me?”

Miss Haverford’s brows arched slightly. “You are meant to marry, are you not? Is it so odd that she might want a moment of privacy with you?”

He blinked again. There was a hint of surprising strength in her tone, as well as a tinge of defensiveness. “No,” he said finally. “No, I suppose not. But are you certain...” He looked left and right, trying to figure out how best to phrase his question. “Is it me she wishes to see?”

She stared in incomprehension. “Yes, my lord.”

She thought he was a lunatic, that much was clear.

Perhaps he was because he wasn’t entirely certain who he was anymore or who Charlotte believed him to be. He cleared his throat. “I just meant...” Oh blast. There was no good explanation. “We haven’t been properly introduced, that’s all.”

“Yes, well...” She sighed and then glanced around to make sure they weren’t overheard. “I think my sister wishes to get to know her future husband better. One cannot fault her for that.”

“No, indeed,” he murmured.

He felt a flicker of hurt that Charlotte was planning a rendezvous with Lord Thomas. Which was obviously ridiculous. He shoved the nagging thought to the side.

“She’s in the library when you have a chance to slip away,” she continued quietly.

He nodded. “Thank you.”

“What was that about?” Paul asked as she walked away.

“The time has come,” Thomas said, his voice low and solemn.

“Could you possibly sound more dramatic?” Paul mused. “I don’t think you could.”

Thomas ignored him, his mind still caught on all that Charlotte’s sister had said. Had she changed her mind about him? Er...the Paul version of him?

Paul was still talking. “Do you know, everyone believes you to be so very uptight and terrifying. I wonder what they would say if they knew you were a romantic given to fits of histrionics?”

Thomas choked on a laugh because his friend was teasing and he knew it.
